LinkedIn™ – Should You Use External Links In Posts?

The short answer is yes! LinkedIn no longer penalises external links as harshly as it once did. BUT where you place the link depends on the goal of your post.

When The Link Should Go In The Post (High-Intent/Action Posts):

If you’re promoting anything that requires action like a workshop, event, lead magnet, sign-up page etc., add the link directly into the body of the post because:

✅ It keeps the message clear and the action easy
✅ Comments move and links get buried as engagement builds
✅ Readers don’t want to hunt for the link in the comments

When The Link Can Go In The Comments (Low-Intent/Optional Extras):

For example:

A supporting article for readers who want more detail
Templates or resources that only some people will need
A link to a past post, podcast or behind-the-scenes update

These are optional add-ons, so it’s fine for the link to sit in the comments rather than the main post because the engagement will be lower and the first comment doesn’t move.

Rule Of Thumb:

If the link is essential and you have added context ➡️ put it in the post
If the link is optional ➡️ put it in the comments 🥰
