Meta™ – To Test Premium Subscriptions On Instagram, Facebook & WhatsApp

Meta is testing new paid subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp that will give users access to exclusive features while keeping the core experiences on each app free.
I’m not convinced this will matter for most small businesses. Meta tends to monetise power users first – the core experience will still be free, and that’s where most people will stay.

Meta™ – Previews Super Bowl Ad for Oakley AI Glasses

Meta is making an influencer-led push to boost interest in its latest AI glasses.
This is interesting but feels very “big brand, big budget” and not something I’d be advising SMEs to worry about or build strategy around right now.

Instagram™ – Tests Displaying ‘Friends’ Instead of ‘Following’

The change puts more emphasis on mutual follows, which could alter the dynamics of the app.
I could potentially like this shift. It reinforces what we’re already seeing, real relationships and interaction matter more than follower counts.

X™ – Is Giving $1 Million To The Writer Of The Top Article

In a bid to get more creators writing in the platform.
Sounds to me like X are serious about attracting proper writers again, not just short, reactive posts. Long-form content clearly has a future on the platform.

X™ – Releases A New Feature Called Starterpacks

The feature will help new users find creators that align with their interests.
Another good reminder that clarity wins. If people can’t immediately tell what you’re about, you won’t get included in lists like this.

TikTok™ – Bows Out: Meta, YouTube Face Addiction Reckoning In Court

TikTok settled a youth addiction lawsuit hours before trial, leaving Meta and YouTube to face claims of defective, harmful designs in a landmark Los Angeles case.
This is a huge moment. It’s likely to influence how platforms justify their algorithms and design choices going forward.

TikTok™ – Aftershocks Of The TikTok Deal: A New App Called Skylight Is Quietly Capturing A Slice Of America’s Attention

In the wake of the forced TikTok divestiture, a new app named Skylight has surged to 380,000 users by focusing on creator-friendly monetisation and data privacy.
We’re going to see more niche platforms pop up like this. Whether they last is another question, but creator trust is clearly becoming a differentiator.

General – UK Consulting On Bringing In social Media Ban For Under 16s

The government has launched a consultation on banning social media for under 16s in the UK as part of a series of measures which it says are intended to “protect young people’s wellbeing.”
This feels like the start of much tighter regulation. Regardless of where you sit on it, platforms will almost certainly need to adapt.

Quick LinkedIn™ Reminder: Clarity Beats Cleverness Right Now!

If your profile or posts don’t make sense in seconds, they’re less likely to travel, no matter how well written they are.

This is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking at in my Profile Review, Renew & Reset sessions this month. Small clarity gaps that quietly limit visibility. The January special runs until the end of the month. Link for further details in ‘work with me’ section below. 👇
