What Is Alt Text & Why Do Websites & Social Media Ask For It On Images?
Alt text (alternative text) is a brief written description of an image added to website code or a social media post. Its primary purpose is to convey the content and purpose of a visual to someone who cannot see it.
Websites and social media platforms prompt you to add alt text for three main reasons:
- Accessibility:
People with visual impairments rely on software called screen readers, which scan the page and read the alt text aloud. Without it, a screen reader will simply announce “image,” and the user will miss out on the context. - Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
Search engines (like Google) cannot “see” images in the traditional sense. Alt text helps search engine bots understand what an image depicts, making your content more discoverable in image search results. - Fallback Content:
If an image file is broken, corrupted or fails to load due to a slow internet connection, the alt text wording appears in the image’s place so the user still understands what was supposed to be there.
So it’s always a good idea to add ‘alt text’ to your images if the option is suggested.
